Mzungu Kichaa, whose real name is Espen Sørensen, is a Danish-born singer-songwriter who has become a celebrated figure in Tanzanian and East African music. Born in 1980 in Denmark, he moved to Tanzania at age six, where he was raised and became fluent in Kiswahili. His stage name, “Mzungu Kichaa,” translates to “crazy white man” and was coined while he was working at Bongo Records in Dar es Salaam in the late 1990s.

He is widely acknowledged as an influential figure in the Bongo Flava scene, a genre that blends hip-hop, reggae, Afrofusion, and Tanzanian sounds. After pursuing a higher education in music and African studies in the UK, he returned to a solo career in 2008. His debut album, Tuko Pamoja, was released in 2009 and featured the hit single “Jitolee.” He has also released other projects, including the EPs Hustle and Relax, and the album Huyu Nani.
